Trade Union Support

Liverpool TUC at its meeting on September 15th 2009 discussed the arrests of Pakistani students earlier in the year in the North West of England, including Liverpool:

On 8 April 2009, armed police carried out a number of raids in the NW of England and arrested  12 students as terrorists suspects.

After intense interrogation not a shred of evidence could be found against them. By the third week of May Manchester police conceded that they were innocent. However, ten were immediately detained under immigration detention provisions.

They are now being moved from prison to prison, some being moved every night.

Recently Justice for North West 10 campaign has been formed.

The meeting of trade unionist from Liverpool including some attending the TUC conference in Liverpool passed a resolution:

1. Demand the ten students are released immediately and allowed to complete their edcuation
2 Support the Justice for North West 10 campaign
3 Write to the Home Secretary demanding  the deportation is stopped and they are released.

4 Invite a speaker from j4nw10 to Liverpool TUC meeting.

University and College Union, UCU, the largest trade union in the Further and higher education sector throughout UK voted to support the ten Pakistani students facing deportation at their 2009 Annual Conference.

This is the first Trade Union at a national level to have formally supported the students in their fight against deportations. We hope UCU will be the first of many to give similar support to the campaign against deportation of these students.

Following is the text of the resolution moved by the University of Liverpool and approved overwhelmingly by the participants of the conference
